Intro
Hello! Welcome to my homepage. These webpages will (hopefully) enlighten, uplift, and enrich your life. Not really though. I think I just work on this site as my little stake in the great world wide web. These pages will give you some insight into me and hopefully will let me share my thoughts and ideas with you. If that idea sounds boring, then click on my links below for more entertaining stuff.

Who Am I?
|
Past
I attended the University of Minnesota where I earned a Computer Science and Art degree through the Inter-College Program. I basically created a custom degree focusing on the combination of art and computer science, specifically computer graphics. I had the pleasure of working with animation, web interactivity, GUI design and creation as well as writing my own 3D model view with smooth shading, a ray-tracer, and implementing a radiosity algorithm.
I attended South High School in Minneapolis, where I was enrolled in a liberal arts program. Not to do an injustice to this fine program, but it basically meant I didn't have to go to Washburn and I had to complete 20 hours of community service. I also went to Anthony Jr. High, Lyndale Elementary, Armitage Elementary, Hale, and Learning Tree Kindergarten. Ahh what fond memories.
Present
Wow, do I have alot of news. First, I finally got a new job (full-time, salaried). After two years of economic uncertainty and hating my job(s), I got a great one. Hopefully this is more stable than the last one. It is in the health care industry. I am now a java developer on a self-service website. Right now I am working on littel projects and slowly assimilating the current codebase.
I could go on and on about my job. I think I most like the fact that I have a 401k, which is great because I had a personal goal to start saving by 25, so I came in just on the mark. I really meant to start saving for the future a while ago, but when you are working on just making ends meet it is damn tough. I have a great respect for people who are working full-time at crap jobs and have to support a family. I don't know how they do it.
With the new found wealth of my job, I got a car. It is a sweet little VW Golf (I love hatchback and seat warmers). I got a fair price and my old neon needed repairs that were twice the cost of the car. I will miss my neon though, it was good to me and got me through some hard times.
I am really looking forward to relaxing, paying off my car, and taking it easy now. But I gotta fix up this webpage sometime and do some financial re-organization. I am only getting .2 percent instrest when I could have a solid 2%, so I gotta re-arrange my money matters soon. Geh, otherwise I like winter and enjoy spending time inside reading and being cozy. Nothing like being wrapped in a great fuzzy blanket and drinking hot chocolate.

What are my hobbies?
I enjoy having so many projects going on at once that my head
threatens to actually explode. I highly enjoy sarcasm in it's many forms
and if I could find a way for electronic sarcasm I would readily (ab)use
it. Right now I am working on my own card based game called War of
the Covens and my RPG (Role Playing Game -- An imagined environment
that multiple players interact within) called ARGS (Abstract Roleplaying Game System). I am
currently learning Javascript, MySQL (relational database stuff), XML, and CSS (which I want to incorperate furthur into my website).
What do I like?
I like pets, both cats and dogs, sleeping in, I definitely am
not a morning person, and reading! My favorite reads are science
fiction and fantasy, currently I am addicted to the Wheel of Time
series by Robert Jordan, I am eagerly awaiting his next, 10th, book. I
must also mention that my favorite authors are Dr. Sues, Issac Asimov,
Douglas Adams, Laura Lemay (She does good technology books), O'reilly books in general, John
Bellairs, Raymond Feist, and many others. I am currently starting the 9th Wheel of Time book.
What do I look like?
This is the internet! The land where everyone is equal, in theory (
In theory communism works, too!). I think if we all start bringing our physical
appearance into the net it sort of defeats something, but
here is a pic anyway. However considering that the sense of sight is among our strongest, it is not unusual the amount of pictures on homepages. I think people can relate more once they have a mental picture to associate with something.

What are my Goals?
Well now that I have graduated (december '00), my goals are quiet different than when I was in school. I plan to save for a small house and start an IRA. I am going to put down roots until Jeannine, my girlfriend, graduates from college. At that point I think if everything is going well, I will propose to her, but it is still a long way off. Right now I can only think that I am incredibly lucky to be so happy and fortunate.
Alot of people look at my crazy when I say "I want to own a house". I look at the advantages of owning a house as pretty simply math. One, more room than an apartment. Two, that money you pay everymonth for an apartment is gone forever. I have spent more than 12,000 dollars during two years at my old apartment. This is quiet easy if you pay 500 to 600 a month. When you buy a house you can resell it and get a chunk of your change back. When I own my own house, I will be in charge of the maintenance and won't have to wait for a landlord to fix something (my current landlord took 4 months to fix a leaky dishwasher).
Eventually I would like to own a house with a library with a fireplace, infloor heating, solid surface countertops, a nice
garden, and a furnished basement ( I hate creepy crawlly things and they
seem to proliferate in unfurnished basements). I would eventually like to
design and produce video games. This is my life long dream. I could
babble about them so if you want to know more, skip to here. My plan right now is to read about games, create a few simple ones, maybe get some friends together to form a company, then find a job with a bigger company. I would love to work for a Nintendo company because of the characters such as Link, Zelda, Simon, and the others, but there is also the draw of the Playstation which can be run on the Macintosh. Ideally it would be great to program in Java and just find a publisher :)

Web Stuff

Why did I build this webpage?
Well there are several answers to that (this?) one. When I interviewed
this summer(1999) for jobs, whenever I mentioned that I was a computer science
major people would immediately ask me if a I had a web page. Then I began
to feel left out, everyone else seemed to have a webpage but me! Not
really but that is how I felt. So when my friend Simon mentioned that I
could run a webpage off of my computer lab account I was tickled pink (I
am still wondering where that expression came from, I usually turn a dark
red or purple when people tickle me, I suppose the duration is the key to
the color one turns). So, combining that with my knowledge of Java, and
primarily, a wonderful book that my ex-girlfriend Jill gave me, I began this
little webpage on January 10th, 1999. And look how it has grown! I just
borrowed the HTML for the frames from my computer science homepage.
Although I did alter it allot, so I don't feel really guilty. Finally I
have learned how to do animated gifs, anchors, rollovers, and tons of other stuff. I
am also extremely interested in IA (Information Architecture).
Design Theory
When I began creating this webpage I had several things in mind.
I knew that I wanted several pages, that would have to be linked to. I
also knew that I wanted to have links that I used a lot so that I could
use the web page as an Internet portal. I soon realized that frames would
give me exactly the access to links that I wanted. I also thought that
frames are hard to do. When I found out that frames were only three lines
of code I added them to my webpage. I then realized that I wanted the
frame on the bottom so that the text would not be distorted. After 20
minutes of work I was relatively happy. I am trying to keep a consistent
look throughout my pages. I would enjoy showing off some animated gifs
or flashing text but I find I don't have a strong need for either.
Especially flashing text, that stuff is really annoying. I am planning on
adding animated gifs in place of my links. Then I can show a little of
my artistic side.
5/5/2000 - But I think I am becoming a simplist. I really enjoy a nice looking webpage, done with little or no images. That is the primary drive behind the makeover of my webpage. I am amazed at what can be accomplished with just tables. It is a good way to organize information also. My next homepage makeover will remove all the formatting and rely on style sheets for appearance. It will be easier to change the look of the page quickly.
